Just imagine.
You're sitting on the Front Porch of the Milky Way, looking out at a great big world. Oceans and mountains, cities and countries, governments and corporations, families and histories, and billions of Stories unfolding all at once. And somewhere in the middle of all that is little ol' you — living your little life, doing your little things, wondering how anything you do could possibly make much difference in a world that enormous.
Well, isn't that an interesting picture?
It's also bass-ackwards!
And I happen to know a little cat who might have something to say about that.
Now, this cat had spent its whole life hearing what cats were supposed to be. Everybody in the neighborhood knew how big cats could get, what cats were capable of, where cats belonged, and what a perfectly reasonable cat ought to expect from life. There were house cats, alley cats, pampered cats, and a few who considered themselves rather important cats. But they all agreed on one thing. A cat was just a cat, and there wasn't much sense in getting carried away about it.
The neighborhood even had a clowder to keep everybody informed. A group of cats is called a clowder — and honestly, once you know that, half the neighborhood makes sense.
And there was our little cat, standing in front of a mirror, having heard every word of it.
Now, the cat could have looked into that mirror and said, "Well, there I am. Just a cat. I suppose that settles it."
But something interesting was happening.
Because deep within that little cat was a knowing that didn't have a thing to do with what the neighborhood thought, what the clowder had decided, or what any reflection had ever shown.
Lion.
That's what felt Just Right.
Not I'd like to become a lion someday. Not I wonder what I need to do to qualify as a lion. And certainly not I hope somebody will finally recognize me as a lion!
Just Lion.
And wouldn't you know it, when that cat looked into the mirror from the knowing of what it already was, there was the lion looking back!
Well, now! THAT ought to give the clowder something to discuss!
But here's the twist. The mirror hadn't made the cat a lion. The mirror hadn't granted permission, issued a certificate, or consulted the clowder. It was reflecting the Light of the Story emerging through the Being standing before it.
The cat didn't have to convince the mirror of anything. It didn't have to study how lions ought to behave, practice its roar, or measure its paws to see whether they were getting any bigger.
It already knew.
The mirror wasn't telling the cat what it was. The Light of what the cat knew itself to be was resonating outward, refracting, projecting, telling the mirror what to reflect.
Now, just imagine what happened when that cat walked back into the neighborhood.
It was the same neighborhood, with the same fences, the same gardens, and those same cats who had been so certain about what everybody was supposed to be.
Except it wasn't quite the same neighborhood anymore, was it?
Because one of the Beings participating in that collective was experiencing an entirely different Story.
Nobody else had to become a lion. Nobody had to agree with the lion. The cat who loves its windowsill could enjoy its windowsill. The cat who wants to explore beyond the garden fence could enjoy a whole new adventure. And the cat who happens to know it's a lion didn't have to spend another afternoon pretending to be just a house cat just to make everybody else comfortable.
And who's to say what else was already emerging in that neighborhood? Perhaps another cat was already Being exactly what it authentically was, and that frequency was part of the collective, too.
One cat Being authentically changed the Story. And every cat Being exactly what it was changed the lion's Story right back.
That's what makes a collective a collective, or a clowder a clowder. It isn't a collection of little separate Beings waiting for one of them to become important enough to change something. It's Energy organizing through the unique participation of everything present. The frequencies that resonate closely share the intimate experiences. The rest bring different Perspectives, different possibilities — a little salt and pepper for the Story.
Nobody has to make themselves smaller to make room for somebody else's authentic Being. And nobody has to be diminished for somebody else to expand.
Now, there's nothing wrong with mirrors. They're rather useful things! The interesting question is what job we've given them.
Are we looking into the mirror to find out what we're allowed to be? Or are we seeing the Light of what we already are becoming perceptible?
The Light tells the mirror what to reflect. The mirror doesn't tell the Light what to be.
When we let the image tell us who we are, we've turned causality upside down. We've made the reflection the authority and started organizing ourselves around what we're just told we ought to see.
But the image isn't the originating cause. It's Conscious Energy becoming perceptible as Story.
And then there's that little word.
Just.
When the neighborhood said "just a house cat," that word did a shrinking job. My goodness, it can take something magnificent and tuck it into a matchbox before anybody has a chance to appreciate what happened! And we do it to ourselves all the time. Someone finally becomes a published author and says, "Well, it was just a little book." Someone makes music, touches people through a song, and says, "Well, I just sing." Someone teaches, creates, loves, travels, raises a family, makes somebody laugh, brings a Perspective into a room that wouldn't have been there otherwise — and then comes that extraordinary little word, doing its diminutive work.
But watch what happens when that same word stands upright.
Just Lion. Just Right. Just Energy.
Same little word — and nothing shrinks.
There is no ordinary. There is just extraordinary.
And Just Energy? Just Energy is everything. Being Just Energy is so normal to us that we've talked ourselves into demeaning it — "Well, it's just energy." Hello! Just Energy is the whole Story, and every one of us is in it.
That's what our little cat knew, and it's what brings us to one wonderfully simple question.
How do I want to feel?
Not so we can make a list of things we're just supposed to do to make the answer happen — goodness, that would put us right back in front of the mirror, asking for instructions! The question opens us to the knowing of what already feels authentic within—the authentic Story emerging.
That's the Goldilocks Zone. Just Right. Fluid enough for Energy to keep reorganizing and reorienting, and tactile enough to slow down and enjoy every wonderful Now.
We were never small Beings trying to find our place in a great big world. We are Conscious Energy — each one a Whole, complete Light Being; all of us together, Hues of Light, Being — and the world becomes what it is through all of us, Being.
And every time our authentic Story progresses, the collective Story progresses with it. Not because we've earned enough importance. Not because everybody knows our name.
Simply because the All is not the All minus you.
So we've had the whole picture bass-ackwards.
Just imagine looking out from your own front porch with that knowing. The same beautiful world, with all its wonderful differences, all its unique Perspectives, all its possibilities for new Stories — only now you're not looking out at something enormous, wondering where you fit. You're enjoying the world of which you are already just an essential part.
Not bigger than anybody else. Not smaller than anybody else.
Just Energy. Just Being. Just Right.
And just imagine the wonderful collective Stories that can emerge when each of us is just authentically Being.
